Daniel Finks

Portfolio Categories: Mixed Media.

View From the Nest, Mixed Media, acrylic, gel medium, 36×36

Daniel Finks is a Furniture Designer and Fine Artist living and working in East Haven, Connecticut. Originally from Michigan, he has a BFA in Furniture Design from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI. He has designed and engineered a wide variety of home furnishings that have sold throughout the world. Daniel also has a dual bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Social-Psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He has been actively creating, showing and selling his artwork for more than twenty years and has had numerous gallery shows.

Daniel’s mixed media artwork incorporates a fearless use of found objects and natural occurring media, with an unconventional use of typical art materials and an unrestricted, anything goes attitude to create pieces he describes as frantic, prolific, and perceptive. Taking shape in the form of landscapes, treescapes and all-out abstraction, his art is deeply personal or superbly superficial and is often rendered into a state of decomposition. His work is intentionally earthy, imperfect, and variegated, bastardizing typical art process and mediums to create a celebration in the beauty of all things imperfect, incomplete and ostensibly crude.

Daniel’s work is a disconnect from the normalcy of pop culture and instead contemplates the beauty in entropy, celebrating the fundamental uncontrollability of nature in the environment. His work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, CT.

Swallow Snack, fine art photograph, 16in h x 20in w

Dianne’s interest in photography began in college where she took a black and white photography and darkroom course. Kate Street

Portfolio Categories: Mixed Media.

Enchanted Cove, shells, fishing net, fishing balls, beads, gems, gold leaf, mica pigments, resin, 36 x 36

Kate Street majored in Psychology at the University of Maine and minored in English Literature. She also has a Master’s Degree in Health and Wellness from Springfield College.  Though art had always been a life-long passion, she never found the time to devote to it other than doodling during her classes. Before having children, she and her husband, Graeme Street, owned their own personal training business in Essex, CT and had a radio fitness show on WLIS and WMRD.   Once the children came along all her time was devoted to homeschooling their three sons. As her boys grew older, she found she could not deny the muse any longer. One day, five years ago she woke up with a compelling urge to paint and has been doing it ever since. Though mostly self-taught, she also gives credit to various artists who provide tutorials on-line.  Even though she took the expected route of schooling, degrees, and education Kate is a life-long mystic and intuitive, making her relationship with the unseen world as strong (or stronger) with that of the physical world and it’s in her art that she can express this aspect of herself. She has show-cased her work at the Essex Coffee and Tea Company the last two years. Along with being a mixed media artist, Kate is also a published author, poet, and musician. Kate’s work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

Maryann Flick

Portfolio Categories: Photography.

Summer Dream, fine art photograph on rice paper

Maryann has lived in Old Saybrook, CT since 1991. She is a Chicago native and former research scientist with a PhD in Molecular Biophysics from Florida State University. Since leaving the world of research, she has had time to pursue two favorite passions: photography and stained glass. She learned to work in stained glass from a master artisan in New Jersey more than 25 years ago.

“Although stained glass and photography seem like unrelated arts, they both depend on light. Photography is all about capturing the light on your subject. The beauty of a stained glass design relies on the interaction of light with the colorful glass. When designing my glass pieces I try to predict how the various types of glass available will work together with light to accomplish my vision for the piece. I never really know how well the combinations work until the piece is completed and placed against the light. It’s always a revelation to view the finished design. Glass is a magical medium to work with and lends itself to so many beautiful and practical finished products. I am proud to carry on a craft that dates to medieval times.”

Maryann’s stained glass is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

Her most recent work demonstrates this technique. Ned Farrell

Portfolio Categories: Paintings.

Hello Beautiful, acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20

Ned Farrell is a Connecticut-based painter and calligrapher, as well as a beekeeper and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Ned’s extensive travels play a large part in inspiring his subject matter.

Ned started painting in a summer class following his sixth grade year, when the school art teacher noticed his love of and skill in art, especially his depictions of nature. During his high school years Ned started developing his own unique style, and won awards in various competitions, including one from the New Britain Museum of American Art. This garnered the attention of the media, and Ned became the subject of articles in local newspapers.

In college Ned studied with J. Cole Young, the Director of Fine Arts at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, among the beautiful Allegheny Mountains.  It was at this time when Ned developed his wanderlust to experience different places and cultures throughout the world. To this end, after graduation Ned joined up with the Peace Corps. Here he was trained as a beekeeper and based in Paraguay, South America. His extensive travels through the forests, rivers, and cities of the South American countries demonstrated a more expansive understanding of color and scale, which he translates into his paintings.

Since then, Ned has always continued to paint, yet has also been an entrepreneur for the past 25 years. He owns The Bee Happy Co. with his wife, and together they have built a brand of luxurious skin care using products from the beehives. He has now moved on to also become a professional artist, focusing mostly on oil and acrylic paintings, and last studying under the tutelage of Eileen Eder.

Ned always has something a little different up his sleeve. Mostly a traditional landscape painter, his paintings portray the subjects as he feels them, and every so often they will cross over to the whimsical and fun, translating the natural world into nearly a storybook fashion.

Jane Milardo

Portfolio Categories: Festival Artists.

Jane Milardo is an artist from Waterford, CT, who has created art all her life, but most of the pieces have never been exhibited before, because she was sidelined by another career. She was a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for 30 years. Prior to that, Jane was a custom picture framer for 13 years. She is now retired and ready to exhibit and sell her art. Most of her pieces are large nudes done in pastel, when Jane was a student at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. Her professor, Deane Keller, told her that she did not need lessons, she needed a studio. The nudes are professionally framed with museum standards. Jane also has some charcoal portraits of famous people, professionally framed as well. Jane is in the process of making all of her artwork into giclees. Giclees are high quality images on archival paper. More recently, Jane has made some abstract pieces in acrylic and will continue to do so. She won a blue ribbon at an art show in Middletown, and another at a show in Waterford. Jane is now a senior citizen, and ready to spend her time showing and selling her art. She hopes you enjoy it as much as she does! Milardo is a featured artist at Spectrum Gallery’s Summer Arts Festival on the Essex Town Green.

Jake Barba

Portfolio Categories: Festival Artists.

Jake is a graduate of Skidmore College and currently works as an analyst in the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  He first started to take photography seriously during his senior year of college when he took a beginner photography course.  He had spent a lot of time previously taking photos, but that intro course gave him the insight into actively forming composition that he carries with him to this day.

It has been six years since that course.  In that time, he has showcased his photos in the Shoreline Arts Association’s IMAGES gallery as well as offered it in various street markets in New York and Connecticut.  Jake is happy with the progress he has made with his photography and am excited where this hobby will take him.

His preferred subject matter has changed over the years, from landscapes, to wildlife, from travel photography to astrophotography.  These photos come from Costa Rica during his time in the Peace Corps, when his host family took him to a rodeo on the first night of his stay with them.

Janice Wood

Portfolio Categories: Festival Artists.

NaturallyintheWoods was started in October of 2012 right out of my home in Wallingford, Ct. My love for candles and scents was a natural pairing – I was so nervous – not knowing if I would have the time to pursue my dream.

With my husband, Steve and two children Jen and Kyle behind me I firmly planted my feet and dove in full force.

I can’t believe it’s has been almost 6 years since I started – I’ve traveled around CT. doing craft shows and fairs meeting wonderful people along the way. All of my candles are made with pure soy wax and natural oils. I’m now in 6 artisan stores – Rings and Things in Colchester, Tesoro’s in Middletown, Stacey T’s Treasures in Wallingford, Finders Keepers in Glastonbury, Pondering Creations in Terryville, and showcased at Spectrum Art Gallery.  Without my customers encouraging me – none of this would have been possible.  I’m still working full time planning shows every year and busy keeping the stores stocked. It’s been a fun journey! I have learned to always stay true to myself, be creative and listen to everyone along the way.  I look forward to seeing you in my travels – Janice Wood owner of NaturallyintheWoods.
