Jim was raised in Waterford, Connecticut. He graduated from Waterford High School in 1980. In 1984, after a less than stellar college career, Jim joined the Navy and spent 8 years serving on submarines as a Reactor Operator. Following his Naval service, Jim moved back to Waterford and spent 30 years working at the Millstone Power Station in various capacities.

In 2011, Jim returned to college and received his bachelor’s degree in information technology and a master’s degree in educational technology. In 2022, he retired from Millstone to take a teaching position at Three Rivers Community College where he continues to work teaching Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Jim has been carving for a year and is self-taught. Many pieces of wood were destroyed while learning to carve. He is a member of the Westerly Art Association and has exhibited in their gallery as well as the Hygienic Gallery in New London. He intentionally throws his figures off balance allowing him to create a sense of unresolved energy. He wants the viewer to feel that if they blinked, the figure might finally complete its stride or succumb to gravity.

Jim continues to live in Waterford with his wife, Jayne and their Golden Doodle, Shmoo, full name “Shmoo Shmoodrick from Shmooville.
