Artist, Doug Troland, discovered painting in 2016. Encouraged by the prompting of a close friend, each asked the other: if they could manifest any talent, what would it be? Doug said, “I wish I could paint.” As a birthday present the following year, this same friend gave him a box of paints. He brought the paints with him on a summer trip to the beach a year later which elicited an obsession with the magic and discovery of painting. Doug’s style is mostly abstract expressionism, still life and portraits, using acrylics – but he always returns to a world of landscapes. They are created from imagination and the influence of coastal imagery (having grown up near the ocean).
His first opportunity as an artist to study in a professional environment (cancelled by the Covid lockdown) was by invitation to participate in a residency from The Nantucket Artists Association. Many of his paintings are in the private collection of close friends, and high-profile individuals in a variety of industries.
Doug lives in New York City. For over 15 years he was employed as an executive in business development for Dewynters Advertising, a London-based entertainment / graphic design firm, promoting the company’s iconic artwork produced for many Broadway and film productions, such as; Cats, Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miz, A Room With A View, and several other Hollywood film projects. After 9/11, the New York office of Dewynters closed, and Doug found new employment as an executive assistant and house manager in the entertainment industry. Now he paints full time. A dream fulfilled. Troland is a featured artist at Spectrum Gallery’s Summer Arts Festival on the Essex Town Green.
