At Gallery: Slow Stitch Workshop

In this workshop learn a meditative technique that allows you to discover the joy of stitching and the benefits of meditation. Slow stitching is a mindful, contemplative practice that uses the repetition of simple stitches on small squares of fabric to create a single piece or one part of a larger piece. You will learn five basic stitches and will create at least one small square that you can take with you. Examples of artist’s unique creations that grew from their stitch meditations will be shown.  No prior stitching experience required.  All materials will be provided.  BYOM- please bring your favorite mug if you would like to sip tea while sewing.

Teaching Artist Susan Zirlen is a mixed media textile artist. She combines her passion for collecting and curating vintage fabric with her love of the natural world. Her obsession with vintage fabrics started early. She likes to search, collect and interpret stories on stitched textiles found at church and tag sales.  She is also a beachcomber and nature lover who cannot pass up a unique shell, a scrap of driftwood or a piece of sea glass.

Through creating textile collage pieces with both natural and man-made embellishments, she hopes to create a connection between the two worlds.

Susan has a master’s degree in Communication Disorders and has worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 30 years. Her textile creations have been sold at local vintage markets, the Middletown Employees Art Exhibitions and now at Spectrum Art Gallery in Centerbrook, CT.
